How To: Prep & Prime Lips

Have you ever been in a situation where you saw someone wear a beautiful lip color and when you tried to rock it, it looks nothing close to how it looked on her?! Yes, we are all victims of this. And if I may confess, it happens more so in nude lipsticks than any other color for myself! Can a sista get an amen?!

A problem area that is most likely causing this is discoloration on the lips which creates an off balance with the lip product. Well ladies I have a few HAZ tips and tricks that I personally do that helps me with this problem. Let me just say that a little prepping and priming goes a long way! These EASY steps help me achieve two important things: 1) Allowing me to neutralize my natural lip tone so that it serves as a clean canvas when I apply my lip color and 2) Allowing me to achieve the true color of my lip stick.

Let’s dive in, shall we?!

Step #1: Start with a clean canvas by wiping your lips with a makeup wipe. I use the Burts Bee Facial Cleansing Towelettes in Pink Grapefruit.

Step #2: Apply a lip scrub! This will remove dead skin from your lips leaving them smooth to the touch. I’m currently loving Sara Happ’s Sparkling Peach duo set. DSC_0144

Step #3: Hydrate your lips! This will help protect your lips from drying out once you apply your lip product. My favorite lip moisturizer to use is MAC’s Lip Conditioner Hydrate Lip Balm. Here’s a quick HAZ tip: try to use a colorless lip moisturizer so that it doesn’t conflict with your lipstick!

Step #4: Neutralize your natural lip tone! It is important to conceal any dark areas on the lips. This will create a neutral canvas allowing your lips to pick up the true pigment of your lipstick. I love MAC’s Lip Erase Lip Balm in the color Dim. It truly helps with concealing any discoloration while hydrating your lips. HAZ Tip: Using a fluffy brush will allow easier application. My Sigma E47 brush is my favorite to use!DSC_0133

Step #5: Apply your lipstick! I’m wearing Pure Zen by MAC.

Step #6: Apply a highlighter to your cupids bow for a sexy, pouty effect! I love Watt’s Up Highlighter by Benefit.
